Specialized transport and lifting operations for Maasvlakte Zuid rail yard
In recent months, M.J. van Riel has made a significant contribution to the construction of the Maasvlakte Zuid rail yard. This project was carried out on behalf of ProRail and the Port of Rotterdam, in close cooperation with Swietelsky Rail Benelux B.V.
Within this project, specialized transport, lifting, and precise positioning played a central role. Thanks to a well-thought-out approach and the deployment of experienced professionals, the project was successfully completed according to plan.
Exceptional transport of railway switches to site
The railway switches were delivered by the manufacturer to the quay at Maasvlakte. From there, M.J. van Riel handled the exceptional transport to the rail yard.
These transports required careful preparation and execution, with safety and efficiency as top priorities. By deploying the right equipment and expertise, all switch components were delivered smoothly to their destination.
Heavy lifting with telescopic cranes up to 500 tonnes
After arrival at the rail yard, the switch components were placed into position using our telescopic cranes. For this project, cranes with capacities of 220, 400, 450, and 500 tonnes were deployed.
In total, no fewer than 28 railway switches were accurately positioned in their final location. This required a high level of precision, coordination, and craftsmanship from our operators and lifting specialists.
Support for overhead line structures
In addition to transport and lifting operations, M.J. van Riel also provided support for the installation of the overhead line system.
For one week, a 70-tonne telescopic crane with a rigger was deployed to install 25 large lattice overhead line gantries. As always, safety, collaboration, and efficiency were key throughout the execution.

This project highlights the strength of collaboration between all involved parties. Thanks to excellent coordination with ProRail, Port of Rotterdam, and Swietelsky Rail Benelux B.V., the project was successfully realized.
